Design and syntheses of novel Buckybowl-graphene hybrid compounds and to establish their ‘structure-property relationships’ have been the active area of my doctoral research.
Corannulene is a molecular representation of an elementary C60 subgraph and hexa-perihexabenzocoronene (HBC) molecule is an elementary subgraphical representation of graphene.
Bowl shape corannulene and flat hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBC) have unique properties and intriguing potential applicability. Despite having their beneficial potentials, hybrid structures consisting both of them have not been perused yet. Buckybowl-graphene hybrids have remained the missing connection in PAH family until now. Recent discovery of a ‘silane-fueled’ intra-molecular Friedel-Crafts reaction via CF bond activation allows Chemist to expand the spectrum of synthetic possibilities and to design and target architectures unachieved before.
