Mr. Jiaxiang Shen, the Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Honorary Dean and Professor of School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, a Chinese Communist Party member, passed away at at 5:05 am in the morning of 30th July. He was 94.

Shen was a Medicinal Chemist, born in Yangzhou City in Jiangsu Province in 1921. He obtained is PhD degree from London University in 1949.He Used to work in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics，Chinese Academy of Sciences as a Professor, the Central Laboratory in Northeast General Pharmaceutical Factory as the Director, Beijin Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry of Ministry of Chemical Industry as the Vice Chief Engineer of, State Pharmaceutical Industry as the Vice Chief Engineer, China Pharmaceutical Developmental Center as the Director and the Honorary Director. He also held concurrent positions in: Shenyang Pharmaceutical University as a Medicinal Chemistry Professor, the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council as a panel reviewer, the Invention of the State Science and Technology Commission as a deputy head of the review committee, the National Science and Technology Progress Award Evaluation Committee of Medical and Health Group as a deputy head, the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association as an Executive Member of the Council. Shen became a Corresponding Academician of Académie Nationale de Pharmacie in 1985.

Shen devoted his long-standing research to the R&D of chloramphenicol, Vitamin A, D etc. He was awarded the China Scientific Conference Prizes 5 times, the National Invention Third Prize once and the National New Product Prizes twice. Shen invented the industrial synthetic routes to chloramphenicol, dexamethasone, Azithromycin, Vitamin A etc. He also worked on the total synthesis of agrimophol, and laid the foundation for the industrial production of steroidal drugs. Shen devoted his energy and efforts to the talents education, cultivated the first generation of the pharmaceutical designing engineers for industry。In June 2014， Shen donated 1 M from his personal earning, to establish the Shen Jiaxiang Education Fund in TJU to support the development of pharmaceutical displines.
